In constant interaction

What quote am I vibing? “Nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it." Pope Francis, from Encyclical, Laudato Si or "Praised Be: On the Care of Our Common Home"

Spring has been a busy time - a wedding in Tennessee, environmental events, visits, gardening, and all of the other things that come when winter ends and life begins.
Sadly since my last blog post, we have lost our 19-year old cat, Smith. I adopted Smith as a baby, and he has been my best friend and constant companion from Pennsylvania to New Jersey to Florida, and now to his final home in North Carolina. Wherever we lived, this boy had to spend time outside. Our supervised walks were an unquestionable part of my daily schedule. Even as it was harder and harder for him to move, we would slowly make our way around the house and yard to make sure everything was as it should be.
I like to think that Smith had a similar wanderlust to me - always curious about what could be around the next corner, about what interesting sort of people (or creatures!) we might meet if we'd only just go for a little journey. He knew that he belonged to nature - that he was just part of it all. On his last day, he spent most of his time just sitting in the grass, looking around at the bees and bugs traveling by. Would that we could all spend our last days this way - in constant interaction with the beauty that exists around us. Give me a window to look out, give me a door to step out, and give me a chance to explore - I want to live like my best buddy, Smith.
